Country Day NYC
Homeschooler Geography Study with PowerPoint Presentations, Potluck Lunch, & Country Jeopardy

What is Country Day NYC?

Country Day NYC is a monthly gathering in Manhattan, in which homeschoolers can share what they have learned about a particular country during the previous month. Each homeschool family studies that month's country in whatever way they choose. That could include checking out library books; viewing documentaries and travel videos; researching via the Internet and online libraries; visiting relevant museum exhibits and ethnic restaurants; interviewing someone who emigrated from that country; and many other kinds of explorations.

During the month's research, each student will decide on a special topic to present to the group on Country Day. Presentation topics can include historical figures; animals and wildlife; special products or natural resources of interest; culture; arts; music and dance; physical geography; history of major wars or other events (Olympics, major peace treaties, etc.); famous people; and many other topics that help us get to know that country a little better.

During the month, we'll stay in touch via a Google Groups mailing list. Both parents and students may join this list, if they have an email address. Once they decide on a presentation topic, students will post the topic on a Google Groups Web page for "Presentations."

Country Day also includes a potluck lunch, with each family bringing a potluck dish inspired by the cuisine of the country. As families decide what they'll be bringing to the potluck, they will post that on a Google Groups Web page for "Potluck."

On Country Day, we begin at 11 a.m. with presentations. We'll view students' presentations for about one hour. Then, about 12 p.m., we'll share a potluck lunch. Toward the end of the lunch, we'll take a show of hands to vote on the country to study during the NEXT month. Then from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., we'll divide the students into teams to play "Country Jeopardy." This works just like the Jeopardy game on TV, with students choosing "History" or "Government" or "Famous People" for $200 or $300 or $400. Alas, the money amounts are just for fun; there are no actual cash prizes. Students will agree on answers as a team, and offer one team answer.
