This page shows you how to change the setup of your PowerPoint Notes pages so that they will print on half of an 8.5 x 11 page. Basically, you'll print on the page sideways, then cut off the empty half of it, so your notes will be one pages sized 5.5 x 8.5 inches.
1. Here is an example using the Mac version of PowerPoint. The menu items may be in slightly different places in the Windows version; just poke around 'til you find the options.

2. Go to the View menu then Notes Master (see below).

3. On the Notes Master page, delete the four small items at the top and the bottoms of the page (Header Area, Date Area, Footer Area, Number Area) by selecting each in turn and deleting (see below). You will then be left with just a box for the slide image at top and a box for your Notes text at bottom.

4. Now go to the File menu and Page Setup... (see below).

5. Within Page Setup, click on the horizontal option (Landscape orientation) beside "Notes, handouts & outlines" so that your notes will print on a page sideways (see below).

6. Now, on the Notes Master page, click to select the Slide image box. You will see square "handles" at each corner and side. Grab the one at the bottom right and drag inward to resize the slide box much smaller. Then point at one of the solid parts of the lines around it (not on a handle) and drag it to the left to move it to the center of the left half of the paper. Or you can use your left arrow key to move it to the left as desired.

7. Do the same with the Notes text box; size it down by dragging inward on a corner handle, then move it to the left side of the page.

8. Now choose "Notes" from the View menu to see how your notes will look when printed. Print your notes, then trim the extra right half of the paper off and you will have "half size" notes to refer to during your presentation
